Ingredients:
2x 1/2 cups wholegrain spelt flour.

1x 4oz can tuna in brine. Salmon can be used if preferred.

1/3 cup chicken broth or water.

A pinch of dried mint.

1 egg yolk.


Baking time: 30 minutes in a pre-heated oven
Temperature: Fan-assisted oven 160°C, conventional oven 180°C

Preparation:

Caution: Ensure any solid bones are removed from the tuna/salmon. Use a food processor or blender mix the fish and smooth out any small pieces.

  • Mix the fish with the wholegrain spelt flour, chicken broth and mint, and work into a smooth dough. Wrap the dough in kitchen film and leave for 30 minutes.

  • Roll out the dough to a thickness of 3mm (1/10in), and cut into any small equal shapes.

  • Cover a baking tray with greaseproof paper and place the hearts on the try. Use a fork to prick holes in them.

  • Bake in a pre-heated oven for 30 minutes, then turn off the oven, open the door and leave the biscuits to cool for one hour.

Treat tip

Remember these biscuits should be stored in an air tight cookie jar but not for too long. Salmon, for example is quite high in fat, so there is a risk it may go rancid. Store the biscuits in an airtight container, and do not keep them for any longer than over one certainly not for more than two weeks.

Ingredients:

  • 1 - 15 oz can red kidney beans
  • 3/4 cup chicken broth
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 Tablespoons natural apple sauce
  • 1 cup  Spelt flour
  • 1/2 cup ground flax
  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 Tablespoon dried parsley

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F
  2. In a mesh strainer, empty the can of beans, rinse thoroughly and drain the beans.
  3. In a food processor, blend the beans, chicken broth, eggs and apple sauce.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, flax, baking powder and parsley.
  5. Pour the bean mixture from the food processor into the large mixing bowl of dry ingredients and combine together.
  6. Lightly spray a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray.
  7. Pour and roll out level about ¼ inch thick
  8. Bake for 15 minutes.
  9. Turn off oven, let the treats cool in the oven until just warm.
  10. Store in air tight container.

Storing - These healthy dog treats should be kept in the refrigerator but are better stored in an air tight jar.They can be stored for longer in the freezer, up to 6 months.

This recipe should make up to 4 dozen small dog treats,each about the size of a small teaspoon.

Tips & Techniques

  • There is practically no nutritional difference between the light and dark red kidney beans. Choose the ones that are available at your local store. You can of course mix mix up red beans with white kidney beans, also called Cannellini beans.

  • Spelt Flour - If you can not find, or do not want to use spelt flour in your dog homemade treats, you can substitute it on a 1 to 1 ratio with whole wheat flour.

  1. 2 1/2 cups spelt flour
  2. 2 tbs flax seed 
  3. 2 extra large egg yolks, lightly beaten
  4. 2Tbsp of ground fennel
  5. 3/4 cup canned natural pumpkin puree 
  6.  1/4 cup cold water or enough to make the dough stick

Instructions:

  1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2.  Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  3.  Combine brown rice flour and flax meal in a large bowl.
  4. Mix eggs and pumpkin together in a separate bowl until smooth.
  5.  Add half of the pumpkin mixture to the brown rice mixture, stir, then add the rest and stir again with a wooden spoon or spatula.
  6.  Add water slowly, as needed. Use your hands to knead the dough together.
  7.  Roll dough out between two pieces of waxed or parchment paper to desired thickness (about 1/4" thick).
  8.  Remove top piece of paper, flip dough onto a counter coated with brown rice flour, remove wax paper, and then cut biscuits as you wish.
  9.  Re-roll and cut scraps until you’ve used every possible bit of dough.
  10.  Place biscuits on parchment-lined baking sheets (or sheets lightly greased with oil).
  11.  Bake for 30 to 45 minutes until the top of the biscuit has dried out completely.
  12.  Let biscuits cool on wire racks, then store in an airtight container. (Makes 36 large dog biscuits.) Note:

Ingredients

1 cup whole Spelt flour

1 teaspoon ginger

1 1/2 teaspoons dry yeast

1/2 cup cornmeal

2 tablespoons soy flour

2 tablespoons wheat bran

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 tablespoons molasses

1 Tablespoon vegetable oil

1 cup water.

Directions

Place all the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add wet ingredients to the dry and mix until a dough is formed.

Divide the dough into 2 or 3 sections and roll into a ball.

Flour your surface and roll each ball to a thickness of ¼" or ½" depending on the size cookie you want. Using cookie cutters, cut out the dog biscuits.

Place cookies on a lightly greased baking sheet and let them rise for 30-60 minutes.

Bake at 300 degrees for about an hour, or until lightly browned.

Turn off the oven and let the cookies cool in the oven overnight.

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat spelt flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 2 tablespoons crunchy peanut butte
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Whisk together the flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon in a bowl.
  3.  Add water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff.
  4.  Roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick roll.
  5. Cut into 1/2-inch pieces.
  6. Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes.
  7. Leave to cool before moving

  • 2 1/2 cups Spelt flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2.  Prick sweet potato several times with a fork.
  3. Heat sweet potato in a microwave on high until tender, about 6 minutes.
  4.  Cut potato in half and scoop flesh out of the skin into a bowl; discard skin.
  5.  Mash potato with a fork or potato masher and transfer about 1 cup to a large bowl. Save any remaining sweet potato for another use.
  6. Mix whole wheat flour, applesauce, and eggs in the large bowl with the sweet potato until a dough forms.
  7.  Turn dough out on a well-floured surface and roll dough to about 1/2-inch thick. Cut out shapes using a cookie cutter or cut dough into strips with a pizza cutter.
  8. Arrange cookies on an un greased baking sheet.
  9. Bake until crisp, 35 to 45 minutes.
  10.  Cool in the trays for 20 minutes before removing to cool completely

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 cups Spelt flour
  • 1 lb ground liver
  • 1-1/2 cups corn meal
  • 3-4 eggs
  • 1 crushed garlic clove
  • 1 Tbsp dried parsley

Add into the food processor and blend for 3 mins.

Lay out in well greased oven tray and bake at 350 ° for 20 min.

I mix it with potato flour, add garlic powder and bake in a cake roll pan for 20-30 min. at 350. Then I cut them in bite size squares and she has her treats.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups Spelt flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 5 medium fresh carrots,  grated roughly
  • 2-3 fresh bananas, peeled and mashed
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar (optional)
  • 1/2 cup cold water

  • Preparation:
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Lay on trays greased cookie sheets.

    Combine well the dry ingredients (flour, cornmeal,brown sugar) in large mixing bowl, then add in the  carrots, bananas, egg, oil, and water and  blend well into workable dough.

Directions

Dust some flour your work surface then roll out dough to desired thickness. Between 1/4 and 1/2" thick.

Cut and  shape,as required.

Place dog cookies on the greased baking sheets and bake 35 minutes...

After baking, turn oven off and leave cookies inside for another 30-45 minutes until crisp.

It is important to leave the treats in the oven to make sure they harden, otherwise they will remain too soft.

  5. . Mash potato with a fork or potato masher and transfer about 1 cup to a large bowl. Save any remaining sweet potato for another use.
  6. Conbine the  Spelt flour, applesauce, and eggs in the large bowl with the sweet potato mix until a dough forms.
  7.  Place the dough ball out on a well-floured surface and roll dough to between1/4 and an 1/2-inch thick.
  8. Cut out shapes using a cookie cutter or cut the rolled dough into strips and shapes.
  9. Place and arrange your cookies on an un-greased baking sheet.
  10. Bake until crisp, 35 to 45 minutes.
  11. It is important to leave to cool down in the oven for about 10 to 15 minutes to crisp up before removing to cool completely.
  12. Once cold place them in an airtight container you can freeze some for later use

Ingredients

3 Cups Whole Spelt flour Flour

3/4 Cup Hot Water

1/2 Cup Powdered Milk

1/3 Cup Margarine or Butter

1 Teaspoon dried mint

1 Egg, Beaten


Directions

In a large bowl, pour hot water over powdered milk, stir well until mixed

Add salt, margarine and egg,then add in gently the Spelt flour.

Mix until a stiff dough forms. Dust your work surface with some extra flour,then roll dough with a roll out at about ½" thick.

Cut into shapes or use any cookie shape cutter.

Bake at 325 degrees for 50 minutes.or until brown and crisp.

It is important to leave the treat to cool down and harden in the oven after it is turned off with the door open to allow gentle cooling to  go hard.
